Apr\u00e8s le d\u00e9part inattendu de <strong>Robert Smith<\/strong> \/ <strong>The Cure<\/strong> juste avant la tourn\u00e9e <em><strong>Hyaena<\/strong><\/em> en Mai 1984 (Lire<a href=\"https:\/\/culturesco.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/13\/siouxsie-and-the-banshees-lalbum-hyaena\/\"><strong> Siouxsie And The Banshees : l&rsquo;album Hyaena<\/strong><\/a>), <strong>Siouxsie<\/strong> et ses boys, plut\u00f4t que baisser les bras, ont rapidement recrut\u00e9 un \u00e9ni\u00e8me guitariste \u2013 le 4e depuis <strong>John McKay<\/strong> ! -, le surdou\u00e9 <strong>John Valentine Carruthers<\/strong> (Ex <strong>Clock<\/strong> <strong>DVA<\/strong>). Avec un EP magistral <em><strong>The Thorn <\/strong><\/em>(Lire<a href=\"https:\/\/culturesco.com\/index.php\/2022\/01\/11\/siouxsie-and-the-banshees-the-thorn-ep-somptueux-bouquet-depines\/\"><strong> Siouxsie And The Banshees : The Thorn EP<\/strong><\/a>), sorte de cahier d&rsquo;exercices pour le p\u2019tit nouveau, celui-ci a prouv\u00e9 qu&rsquo;il pouvait ais\u00e9ment reprendre le fil des arabesques du g\u00e9nial <strong>John McGeoch<\/strong>. L&rsquo;affaire doit \u00eatre rapide, les <strong>Banshees<\/strong> ayant particuli\u00e8rement travaill\u00e9 les compositions auparavant, du moins l&rsquo;esp\u00e8rent-ils. H\u00e9las, un premier producteur, l&rsquo;homme des r\u00e9alisations grandioses,<strong> Bob Ezrin<\/strong>, est rapidement \u00e9vinc\u00e9 avant m\u00eame son arriv\u00e9e en Allemagne.<strong> Hugh Jones<\/strong> prend le relai, en tout cas pour les enregistrements car lors du mixage, <strong>Siouxsie<\/strong> constate son incomp\u00e9tence et le vire \u00e9galement. L&rsquo;ing\u00e9nieur du son <strong>Julian Standell<\/strong> accompagne alors le groupe lors de nouvelles sessions au <strong>Studio Matrix<\/strong> de Londres en Septembre. Finalement, <strong>Steve Churchyard<\/strong> finalise les vocaux et mixe l&rsquo;album au <strong>Air Studio<\/strong> en D\u00e9cembre 1985.<\/p>\n<h3>La tornade<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Suivant deux singles \u00e9tendards exemplaires, le volcanique <strong>Cities In Dust<\/strong> (D\u00e9cembre 1985) et le cinglant <strong>Candyman<\/strong> (F\u00e9vrier 1986), le recueil finement intitul\u00e9 <em><strong>Tinderbox<\/strong> <\/em>et contenant huit titres arrive chez les disquaires en Avril 1986. La pochette arbore une rare couleur rouge bordeau avec une photographie c\u00e9l\u00e8bre de tornade prise par <strong>Lucille Handberg<\/strong> dans le Minnesota \/ USA en 1927. La m\u00eame image figurait sur <em><strong>Stormbringer<\/strong><\/em>, un album de <a href=\"https:\/\/culturesco.com\/index.php\/2019\/09\/13\/deep-purple-2-burn-premier-album-de-deep-purple-mark-iii\/\"><strong>Deep Purple<\/strong> <\/a>en 1974. L\u2019appellation du disque \u2013 la poudri\u00e8re, la situation explosive au sens figur\u00e9 &#8211; a \u00e9t\u00e9 choisie tardivement, dans l\u2019un des textes de <strong>Severin<\/strong>. Au verso, les titres et une photo traficot\u00e9e de la Brune en danseuse serpentine entour\u00e9e de ses spectres de musiciens. La sous-pochette pr\u00e9sente les paroles, toutes \u00e9crites par <strong>Siouxsie<\/strong>, les cr\u00e9dits et des portraits en buste du quatuor relook\u00e9. D\u2019embl\u00e9e, comme pour le <em><strong>Thorn EP<\/strong><\/em>, le mixage de <strong>Steve<\/strong> <strong>Churchyard<\/strong> est somptueux, l\u2019un des plus d\u00e9monstratifs des <strong>Banshees<\/strong>. Si l\u2019on retrouve des constantes de l\u2019\u00e9quipe &#8211; les battements pr\u00e9cis et amples de <strong>Budgie<\/strong>, la basse inexorable de <strong>Severin<\/strong>, aux sonorit\u00e9s toujours surprenantes &#8211; celles-ci s\u2019av\u00e8rent magnifi\u00e9es par la production. <strong>Carruthers<\/strong> ajoute des ornementations g\u00e9om\u00e9triques et des d\u00e9coupages de riffs. Et bien s\u00fbr, <strong>Siouxsie<\/strong> domine le tout de sa voix unique, jouant sur diff\u00e9rents registres, de l\u2019envol\u00e9e lyrique \u00e0 la confidence, jusqu\u2019aux comptines enfantines. Apr\u00e8s une m\u00e9lop\u00e9e \u00e9th\u00e9r\u00e9 de la chanteuse, le guitariste amorce un arp\u00e8ge hypnotique autant en \u00e9lectrique qu\u2019en acoustique, soutenu par une rythmique v\u00e9loce. Tandis que <strong>Siouxsie<\/strong> \u00e9voque l\u2019esprit d\u2019un amant disparu la visitant pendant le sommeil, <strong>Carruthers<\/strong> d\u00e9veloppe une autre ligne de guitare en chorus qui pr\u00e9c\u00e8de le refrain appuy\u00e9 par la batterie et des notes de piano. Un troisi\u00e8me th\u00e8me surgit alors en acm\u00e9 sur une belle descente d\u2019accords typiques du Rock anglais. La richesse des arrangements, la qualit\u00e9 instrumentale et l\u2019\u00e9motion r\u00e9elle qui se d\u00e9gagent de ce titre en font l\u2019une des plus belles surprises et r\u00e9ussites des <strong>Banshees<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Siouxsie And The Banshees &#8211; The Sweetest Chill &#8211; Tinderbox (1986)<\/h3>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"PZJGSHk8nUA\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sweetest Chill\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PZJGSHk8nUA\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A partir de <strong>The Sweetest Chill<\/strong>, les morceaux de cette premi\u00e8re face, sont li\u00e9s par un fondu encha\u00een\u00e9, un proc\u00e9d\u00e9 que n\u2019avait pas encore utilis\u00e9 le gang et qui indique au moins une continuit\u00e9 narrative. Ainsi pendant que s\u2019\u00e9vanouit le morceau ant\u00e9rieur, <strong>Budgie<\/strong> et <strong>Severin<\/strong> s\u2019avancent pos\u00e9ment, presqu\u2019en dub, la batterie en \u00e9cho et la basse \u2013 <strong>Fender Jazzbass\u00a0<\/strong>? \u2013 en sonorit\u00e9 m\u00e9dium \u00e9poustouflante. Il y a sur ce disque un plaisir \u00e9vident de jouer que privil\u00e9gie un mix clair et \u00e9quilibr\u00e9, sans la confusion sonore \u2013 trop de r\u00e9verb &#8211; qui g\u00eanait parfois le LP <em><strong>Hyaena<\/strong><\/em>.<strong> Carruthers<\/strong> ressort les stridences qu\u2019utilisaient <strong>John McGeoch<\/strong> puis <strong>Robert Smith<\/strong> dans <strong>Night Shift<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/culturesco.com\/index.php\/2019\/06\/26\/siouxsie-and-the-banshees-4ieme-album-juju-avec-le-guitariste-john-mcgeoch-spellbound-arabian-knigths\/\"><em><strong>Juju<\/strong><\/em><\/a>) et le final du live <strong>Nocturne<\/strong>. Le d\u00e9roul\u00e9 de <strong>This Unrest<\/strong> alterne s\u00e9quences hypnotiques et cassures brutales amen\u00e9es par ces filous de <strong>Severin<\/strong> et <strong>Budgie<\/strong> qui s\u2019\u00e9clatent pendant les cris de la chanteuse, avant un final d\u00e9cor\u00e9 de ch\u0153urs majestueux. Voir toute une civilisation p\u00e9trifi\u00e9e dans la lave, c\u2019\u00e9tait comme se projeter sur les lieux \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque et imaginer ce que \u00e7a a d\u00fb \u00eatre. Je trouve \u00e7a tr\u00e8s facile, de percevoir des images fantomatiques de la vie qui continue comme avant. Je me demande souvent si c\u2019est \u00e7a, les vraies hantises\u00a0: l\u2019imagination et les sens qui font revivre les choses. C\u2019est pour \u00e7a qu\u2019on ne pourrait jamais les capturer sur pellicule. \u00bb<\/em><br \/>\n&#8211;<strong> Siouxsie<\/strong>, interview du<strong> Melody Maker,<\/strong> 17 \/ 10 \/ 1992 &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Impr\u00e9gn\u00e9e par cette d\u00e9couverte des ruines de<strong> Pomp\u00e9i<\/strong>, le groupe en donne une correspondance musicale, le fameux <strong>Cities In Dust<\/strong>. Apr\u00e8s des coul\u00e9es de guitare, une batterie \u00e9lectronique puis une ritournelle de synth\u00e9 <strong>DX-7<\/strong> jou\u00e9e par <strong>Severin<\/strong> qui ponctue la chanson, <strong>Budgie<\/strong> intervient dans une accroche m\u00e9morable. Sa batterie en avant et les trouvailles de <strong>Carruthers<\/strong> &#8211; accords en ciseaux ou cliquetis rythmiques de l\u2019\u00e9cho \u2013 renforcent l\u2019aspect de danse macabre. Au milieu, la Brune en cheffe joue la pythie qui questionne les corps antiques fig\u00e9s par la lave. Lors du pont, le guitariste sort de sa <strong>Yamaha SG 1000<\/strong> \u2013 comme <strong>McGeoch<\/strong> &#8211; un inattendu solo orientaliste, l\u2019un des sommets du titre. Sortie en single pendant l\u2019hiver 1985 \/ 1986, cette \u00e9pop\u00e9e tellurique cassera la baraque dans les charts un peu partout, au milieu des Hits des confr\u00e8res, <a href=\"https:\/\/culturesco.com\/index.php\/2019\/08\/12\/the-cure-the-head-on-the-door-et-le-debut-de-la-curemania\/\"><strong>In Between Days<\/strong> <\/a>de <strong>The Cure<\/strong> et <strong>Alive And Kicking<\/strong> de <strong>Simple Minds<\/strong>. Inspir\u00e9e par une \u00e9mission sur <strong>T.S Eliott<\/strong> et les d\u00e9r\u00e8glements de la m\u00e9t\u00e9o dans les ann\u00e9es 20, <strong>Siouxsie<\/strong> raconte le recours d\u00e9sesp\u00e9r\u00e9 \u00e0 des canons la nuit pour crever les nuages, et qu\u2019il pleuve enfin\u2026 L\u2019allure du th\u00e8me se rapproche de <strong>Spellbound<\/strong> sur <a href=\"https:\/\/culturesco.com\/index.php\/2019\/06\/26\/siouxsie-and-the-banshees-4ieme-album-juju-avec-le-guitariste-john-mcgeoch-spellbound-arabian-knigths\/\"><em><strong>JuJu<\/strong> <\/em><\/a>(1981). D\u2019ailleurs, <strong>Carruthers,<\/strong> hormis ses arp\u00e8ges obs\u00e9dants et maniaques, utilise \u00e0 nouveau le truc de la guitare acoustique en pointill\u00e9s rapides qu\u2019avait initi\u00e9 <strong>John McGeoch<\/strong> pour ce classique, de m\u00eame que pour le single <strong>Christine<\/strong> (1980). La construction s\u2019av\u00e8re kal\u00e9idoscopique avec une suite de six s\u00e9quences enchev\u00eatr\u00e9es, lesquelles auraient presque pu conduire \u00e0 autant de chansons. Cette s\u00e9rie de flashs d\u00e9montre une fois encore l\u2019excellence instrumentale de cet opus. \u00c9coutez par exemple la ligne de batterie de <strong>Budgie<\/strong>, la basse mouvante de <strong>Severin<\/strong>, et l\u2019arriv\u00e9e inopin\u00e9e des claviers. Quant \u00e0 <strong>Carruthers<\/strong>, il multiplie les pistes de guitares, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 huit sur certains morceaux de <em><strong>Tinderbox<\/strong><\/em>, comme il l\u2019a lui-m\u00eame d\u00e9clar\u00e9.
