Pour cet artiste faiseur de tubes, souvent l\u00e9gers et g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement optimistes, le questionnement semblait l\u00e9gitime. Faire oublier l\u2019injustice et les in\u00e9galit\u00e9s \u00e0 la communaut\u00e9 noire en conservant classe et dignit\u00e9 \u00e9tait son principal objectif.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">L\u2019espoir et les illusions des sixties s\u2019\u00e9tant dissous dans le sang et les overdoses d&rsquo;h\u00e9ro\u00efne, la candeur des productions Motown ne fait plus recette au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 70. M\u00eame l\u2019intraitable <strong>Berry Gordy<\/strong>, directeur et fondateur du label, se sent d\u00e9muni devant une telle conjoncture. Whitfield et Strong, eux, comprennent que la tendance est au r\u00e9alisme.<\/p>\n<h3>L&rsquo;\u00e8re du neofunk<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">C\u2019est dans son v\u00e9cu, et principalement les drames familiaux v\u00e9cus par des amis ou voisins que <a href=\"https:\/\/culturesco.com\/index.php\/2023\/09\/15\/money-lhistoire-de-barrett-strong-et-du-premier-tube-motown-money-thats-what-i-want\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barrett Strong<\/a> puise les paroles de <em>Papa Was a Rolling Stone<\/em>. Et plus g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement, dans la tradition du blues. L\u2019histoire d\u2019un p\u00e8re de famille oisif, infid\u00e8le,<em> \u201cvolant au nom du seigneur\u201d<\/em>, et retrouv\u00e9 mort un 3 septembre.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><em>\u00ab\u00a0It was the third of September<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>C&rsquo;\u00e9tait le 3 septembre<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em><strong>That day I&rsquo;ll always remember, yes I will<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ce jour, jamais je ne l&rsquo;oublierai, c&rsquo;est certain<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><em>&lsquo;Cause that was the day that my daddy died\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Car c&rsquo;est le jour o\u00f9 mon p\u00e8re est mort<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Le texte se pr\u00e9sente comme un dialogue entre les enfants et leur m\u00e8re. Les couplets \u00e9voquent le souvenir de la mort du p\u00e8re, et l\u2019image n\u00e9gative de ce dernier entretenue par son absence, aussi bien que par le ressentiment de la m\u00e8re. Tandis que les enfants cherchent des r\u00e9ponses aupr\u00e8s d&rsquo;elle, l\u2019amertume la pousse sans cesse \u00e0 r\u00e9pondre&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><em>\u201c Papa was a rolling stone<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Papa \u00e9tait un vagabond<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><em>Wherever he laid his hat was his home<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Partout o\u00f9 il posait son chapeau, c\u2019\u00e9tait sa maison<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><em>And when he died, all he left us was alone\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Et quand il est mort, il ne nous a rien laiss\u00e9s<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Si ce titre est \u00e0 jamais associ\u00e9 aux Temptations, ils ne sont pas les premiers \u00e0 l\u2019avoir enregistr\u00e9. En 1971, Norman Whitfield et Barrett Strong le confient au groupe <strong>The Undisputed Truth<\/strong>. Jusque l\u00e0, ils se sont surtout illustr\u00e9s en tant que groupe d\u2019accompagnement pour les stars de la Motown (Supremes, Temptations, Marvin Gaye\u2026), et sont c\u00e9l\u00e8bres pour leurs shows sc\u00e9niques et leurs tenues psych\u00e9d\u00e9liques. Bien qu\u2019il obtienne une honorable 24\u00e8me place au classement R&amp;B, <em>Papa Was a Rolling Stone<\/em> ne d\u00e9passe pas la 63\u00e8me au Billboard 100.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Norman Whitfield sent pourtant que ce drame familial peut conqu\u00e9rir un plus large public. Le groove de l\u2019instrumental poss\u00e8de une sensualit\u00e9 marqu\u00e9e. Quant au texte, il renoue avec les histoires tragiques du blues. Si <strong>Melvin Franklin<\/strong>, <strong>Richard Street<\/strong> et <strong>Damon Harris<\/strong> se plient \u00e0 contre-coeur aux exigences de Norman Whitfield, le lead-singer <strong>Dennis Edwards<\/strong> (ayant remplac\u00e9 David Ruffin en 1968) se montre extr\u00eamement r\u00e9ticent. Ce dernier s\u2019insurge du fait que les paroles comportent trop de similitudes avec sa propre existence. Sans compter qu&rsquo;initialement, le texte \u00e9crit par Barrett Strong n&rsquo;\u00e9tait pas destin\u00e9 aux Temptations. Il semblerait que le chanteur ait eu du mal \u00e0 mettre de c\u00f4t\u00e9 les diff\u00e9rends l\u2019opposant \u00e0 Norman Whitfield, ainsi qu\u2019une certaine aversion pour le rhythm and blues moderne.
