Et cette dominance de vert ! L\u2019ouverture, elle, d\u00e9voile un panoramique du quintet en pleine course (Photo : <strong>Richard Rayner-Canham<\/strong>). Il y a m\u00eame un insert \u2013 vert bien s\u00fbr &#8211; avec les paroles et les notes. De luxe, ce second album de <strong>Magazine<\/strong>, <strong>Secondhand Daylight<\/strong>, sorti en Mars 1979. Et surtout \u00e0 la production arrive <strong>Colin Thurston<\/strong>, l\u2019un des ing\u00e9s sons de la p\u00e9riode berlinoise de <a href=\"https:\/\/culturesco.com\/index.php\/2019\/01\/07\/david-bowie-et-iggy-pop-amitie-eternelle\/\"><strong>Bowie et d\u2019Iggy<\/strong><\/a> (<strong>Heroes<\/strong> et <strong>Lust For Life<\/strong>). Et \u00e7a pour le chanteur \/ leader et son second, le brillant guitariste-saxophoniste<strong> John McGeoch<\/strong>, \u00e7a vaut tous les <strong>Phil Spector<\/strong> du monde.<br \/>\nComme on les comprend ! D\u00e8s l\u2019ouverture,<strong> Feed The Enemy<\/strong>, la beaut\u00e9 du son vous submerge les oreilles ! La console rutile dans tout le spectre. C\u2019est l\u2019une des plus belles productions de cette fin de si\u00e8cle, digne d\u2019ailleurs du mastodonte\u2026 <strong>Pink Floyd\u00a0<\/strong>! Consternations des p\u2019tits punks \u00e0 cr\u00eates et des punkettes \u00e0 zipettes !<\/p>\n<h3>Magazine &#8211; Feed The Enemy &#8211; Secondhand Daylight (1979)<\/h3>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"zwb-wBKN7MA\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Magazine - Feed The Enemy\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zwb-wBKN7MA\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Autre r\u00e9v\u00e9lation sonique, et pas des moindres\u00a0: la basse de <strong>Barry Adamson\u00a0<\/strong>! Rogntudjuuuuu\u00a0! Le <strong>Barry<\/strong> a d\u00e9laiss\u00e9 sa<strong> Rickenbacker 4001<\/strong> pour une <strong>Gibson EB-3<\/strong> de forme <strong>SG <\/strong>et aux sonorit\u00e9s plus rondes. Mais surtout, il s\u2019amuse avec la p\u00e9dale <strong>Chorus et la R\u00e9verb<\/strong>. \u00c7a lui donne un nouveau son rampant et enveloppant, l\u2019un des plus personnels de la New Wave en devenir. En plus, c\u2019est pas un rigolo du manche\u2026 Quant aux autres, ils rayonnent dans toute la st\u00e9r\u00e9o\u00a0: <strong>McGeoch<\/strong> et ses fl\u00e8ches de 6 cordes et ses pointes de sax, <strong>Dave Formula<\/strong> et tout son attirail de claviers majestueux, le p\u2019tit nouveau <strong>Doyle<\/strong> aux percus, et enfin <strong>Mister Howard<\/strong>, tel un bonimenteur malsain devisant son discours parano\u00efaque.<\/p>\n<h3>Cut Out Shapes<\/h3>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"DfMvcGDkOes\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Magazine - Cut Out Shapes\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DfMvcGDkOes\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Comme pour leur premier essai, l\u2019album alterne d\u2019abord en 1re face pi\u00e8ces innovantes, encore sans \u00e9quivalences \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, et n\u00e9opunkeries, &#8211; <strong>Rythm Of Cruelty<\/strong>,<strong> Talk To The Body..<\/strong>. Mais l\u00e0 aussi, les gars d\u00e9ploient une aisance dans les arrangements et l\u2019instrumentation \u00e0 d\u00e9grafer toutes les \u00e9pingles \u00e0 nourrice. <strong>Doyle<\/strong>, le nouveau tambour major s\u2019en sort d\u2019ailleurs avec les honneurs, multipliant les changements de beat, d\u2019autant plus que le dou\u00e9 <strong>Thurston<\/strong>, l\u2019ing\u00e9 son, l\u2019ornemente en retrouvant ses r\u00e9glages de compresseurs et de filtres \u00e0 la <strong>Heroes<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n<h3>I Wanted Your Heart<\/h3>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"kqnzqBB-Bz4\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"I Wanted Your Heart (2007 Digital Remaster)\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kqnzqBB-Bz4\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Pour la seconde partie, <strong>Magazine<\/strong> d\u00e9voile toutes ses ambitions. Premi\u00e8re \u00e9tape, l\u2019instrumental <strong>The Thin Air<\/strong>. Le sieur<strong> McGeoch<\/strong> s\u2019\u00e9tait amus\u00e9 avec les machines de <strong>Formula<\/strong>. En r\u00e9sulte cette \u00e9tonnante pi\u00e8ce domin\u00e9e par les synth\u00e9s et un saxophone tr\u00e8s <strong>Dark Side Of\u2026 Manchester<\/strong> ! Les derniers auditeurs punks d\u00e9faillent et s\u2019auto-d\u00e9truisent telle une cassette instructive de <strong>Mission Impossible<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>The Thin Air<\/h3>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"f4UVwWrDU4A\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Thin Air (2007 Digital Remaster)\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/f4UVwWrDU4A\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Faut dire que la suite enfonce le clou.<strong> Back To Nature<\/strong> est une longue introspection de<strong> Devoto<\/strong>. Le clavi\u00e9riste<strong> Formula<\/strong> \u00e9nonce l\u2019intro au piano, la m\u00e9lodie \u00e9voque les miniatures de <strong>Erik Satie<\/strong> ou de <strong>Brian Eno<\/strong>. Le chanteur se lance. Puis, des nappes mena\u00e7antes de synth\u00e9s inondent les enceintes avant l\u2019arriv\u00e9e implacable de <strong>Doyle et Adamson<\/strong>, acc\u00e9l\u00e9rant en crescendo le tempo. Le morceau s\u2019emporte dans les d\u00e9coupages de guitares et de claviers. Le pont o\u00f9 <strong>Adamson <\/strong>mart\u00e8le ses pulsations de basse tandis que <strong>Devoto<\/strong> et les autres d\u00e9raillent est merveilleux. Les gars reprennent l\u2019arrangement d\u2019intro, <strong>McGeoch<\/strong> lance un solo \u00e9pique et le morceau s\u2019ach\u00e8ve en apoth\u00e9ose. 6 minutes 54 inou\u00efes !<\/p>\n<p><em>Back to\u00a0nature<\/em><br \/>\n<em>a\u00a0trip that I\u00a0can\u2019t take<\/em><br \/>\n<em>people are thinking<\/em><br \/>\n<em>that they\u2019ve dreamed of\u00a0this place<\/em><br \/>\n<em>back to\u00a0nature<\/em><br \/>\n<em>it\u00a0was somewhere else<\/em><br \/>\n<em>back to\u00a0nature<\/em><br \/>\n<em>right back on\u00a0top of\u00a0yourself<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And I\u2019m telling you<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I\u00a0know what you\u2019ve been going through<\/em><br \/>\n<em>in\u00a0my\u00a0heart of\u00a0hearts<\/em><br \/>\n<em>when I\u00a0was here<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and you were there<\/em><br \/>\n<em>nothing was between us<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We\u2019re up\u00a0in\u00a0the air<\/em><br \/>\n<em>We\u2019re down on the ground\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Back To Nature<\/h3>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"Ca91jzdJYY0\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Back To Nature (Remastered 2007)\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ca91jzdJYY0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Pour le titre suivant,<strong> Believe That I Understand<\/strong>, on pense \u00e0 nouveau \u00e0 une chute des sessions du <strong>Thin White Duke<\/strong>. Mais <strong>Howard<\/strong> nous r\u00e9conforte en proclamant tout de suite: <em>\u00abHere Is The Love Of Your Life&#8230;\u00bb<\/em> Est-ce vraiment un propos rassurant\u00a0? Apparemment, les textes de ce recueil tourneraient autour d\u2019une rupture sentimentale ou en tout cas d\u2019une vision particuli\u00e8re du romantisme \u00e0 la <strong>Devoto<\/strong>. Encore une fois, la modernit\u00e9 revendiqu\u00e9e du son et de l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation nous interpelle.<\/p>\n<h3>Believe That I Understand<\/h3>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"vxzspw2LW2g\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Believe That I Understand (2007 Digital Remaster)\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vxzspw2LW2g\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Ah la derni\u00e8re pi\u00e8ce, <strong>Permafrost<\/strong>. Souvenir d\u2019un cours de G\u00e9ologie, une terre constamment gel\u00e9e. Est-on d\u00e9j\u00e0 all\u00e9 aussi loin dans cette sensation de malaise ? Le tempo et le jeu de<strong> Doyle<\/strong> s\u2019alourdissent,<strong> McGeoch et Formula<\/strong> se r\u00e9pondent puis le bassiste <strong>Adamson<\/strong> prend le chorus\u00a0 pour introduire <strong>Devoto<\/strong> le s\u00e9ducteur. Sournoisement, le chanteur murmure \u00e0 une fille qu\u2019il va la droguer puis la baiser sur le permafrost. Avec perversion, le groupe propose l\u2019antith\u00e8se du final <strong>Parade <\/strong>sur <strong>Real Life<\/strong>. Pour conclure, <strong>McGeoch<\/strong> balance une derni\u00e8re suite de notes distordues et dissonantes, l\u2019une de ses plus \u00e9tranges cr\u00e9ations alors que <strong>Devoto<\/strong> reprend sa d\u00e9claration perverse, au cas o\u00f9 quelqu\u2019un ou quelqu\u2019une n\u2019aurait pas bien compris. <em>Vicious<\/em> pourrait dire <strong>Lou Reed<\/strong> !<\/p>\n<h3>Permafrost<\/h3>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"ZJ2pDwbyxTc\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Permafrost (Remastered 2007)\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZJ2pDwbyxTc\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Secondhand Daylight<\/strong> rencontrera beaucoup moins de louanges que <strong>Real Life<\/strong>. On lui reprochera sa noirceur, sa perfection trop Arty, son c\u00f4t\u00e9 <strong>Pink Floydien<\/strong>. Il se vendra peu, renfor\u00e7ant sa l\u00e9gende d\u2019album maudit. <strong>Devoto<\/strong> et le groupe en sortiront meurtris, d\u00e9sappoint\u00e9s alors qu\u2019ils pensaient avoir r\u00e9alis\u00e9 un disque largement sup\u00e9rieur au premier. Le fait qu\u2019encore une fois, leur leader refuse de jouer le jeu normal des relations avec la presse n\u2019arrangera rien et augmentera l\u2019incompr\u00e9hension et la ranc\u0153ur de <strong>McGeoch<\/strong>. En plus, ils rencontreront les p\u2019tits d\u00e9butants de <a href=\"https:\/\/culturesco.com\/index.php\/2023\/01\/31\/simple-minds-empires-and-dance\/\"><strong>Simple Minds<\/strong> <\/a>en 1re partie, avec un <strong>Jim Kerr<\/strong> et un <strong>Charlie Burchill<\/strong> subjugu\u00e9s par <strong>Howard<\/strong> et son \u00e9quipe de musiciens aussi d\u00e9viants qu\u2019\u00e9tonnants.<br \/>\nPour certains fans, dont votre auteur, <strong>Secondhand Daylight<\/strong> reste un monument du Post-Punk naissant &#8211; pour info, <a href=\"https:\/\/culturesco.com\/index.php\/2020\/11\/14\/jon-savage-lhistoire-orale-de-joy-division\/\"><strong>Unknown Pleasures<\/strong> <\/a>des voisins <strong>Joy Division<\/strong> sort trois mois plus tard &#8211; : de par son pessimisme rageur, ses trouvailles en tout genre, notamment le son de basse de l\u2019immense <strong>Barry Adamson<\/strong>, et le talent de narrateur de<strong> Devoto<\/strong>.
