Il faut dire qu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, au milieu des ann\u00e9es 90, coinc\u00e9e en pleine gu\u00e9guerre Britpop <strong>Blur<\/strong> <strong>VS Oasis<\/strong>, la bande vend quand m\u00eame plus de 1 million d\u2019exemplaires de son premier album<strong> I Should<\/strong> <strong>Coco<\/strong>, port\u00e9 par son single dynamique et des concerts \u00e9nergisants. Chacun se replie donc dans son refuge tandis que <strong>Gaz Coombes<\/strong> commence \u00e0 cogiter sur la suite&#8230; Pour lui, il est clair que <strong>Supergrass<\/strong> doit passer un nouveau cap, avec un album plus mature, plus abouti. Il \u00e9coute pas mal de tr\u00e9sors des ann\u00e9es 60 \/ 70, dont des cr\u00e9ations solo de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_moR9X6cxRuocK1f6IA8WkC7iOkCALADcw\"><strong>Brian Eno<\/strong><\/a> apr\u00e8s<a href=\"https:\/\/culturesco.com\/index.php\/2020\/12\/31\/roxy-music-for-your-pleasure-stranded-country-life\/\"> <strong>Roxy Music<\/strong><\/a>, ou lit la biographie de <strong>Brian Wilson<\/strong>, le mentor g\u00e9nial mais allum\u00e9 des <strong>Beach Boys<\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>RADIOSCOPIE DE L&rsquo;ALBUM<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Pourtant, en pr\u00e9mices du LP, c\u2019est encore un titre jovial que lance le groupe en Mai 1999, le tonitruant <strong>Pumping On Your Stereo<\/strong>. Il y a quelque chose des<strong> Stones<\/strong> de la fin des sixties dans ce th\u00e8me, avec ce d\u00e9tachement de la voix de Gaz dans les couplets, alors que les ch\u0153urs de faussets du refrain \u00e9voquent une s\u00e9ance d\u2019enregistrement drolatique. Le genre de morceaux qui appara\u00eet en 10 minutes lors d\u2019une r\u00e9p\u00e9tition pr\u00e9cisera <strong>Danny Goffey<\/strong>. Le clip leur permettra de rendre hommage \u00e0 une institution des ann\u00e9es 70, <strong>Jim Henson<\/strong>, le cr\u00e9ateur des <strong>Muppets<\/strong>. Bonne trouvaille les radioscopies du trio en buste, on fait un check-up en m\u00eame temps qu\u2019une pochette. \u00c9videmment, il sera tr\u00e8s vite surnomm\u00e9 le <strong>X-Ray Album<\/strong>.<br \/>\nEn nouveau single, son ouverture <strong>Moving<\/strong>. Une intro plut\u00f4t ballade m\u00e9lancolique, guitare acoustique sur nappes d\u2019orgue \u2013 ils ont d\u00fb \u00e9couter les premi\u00e8res mesures de <a href=\"https:\/\/culturesco.com\/index.php\/2021\/01\/21\/animals-le-chef-doeuvre-engage-de-pink-floyd-pigs-dogs-sheep-pigs-on-the-wing\/\"><strong>Dogs de Pink Floyd<\/strong><\/a> -, et soudain brutal changement de ton en funk rock bondissant, puis reprise du premier th\u00e8me en alternances et solo bienvenu de guitare folk. L\u00e0, on per\u00e7oit mieux les intentions des gars : pas de barri\u00e8res dans le style comme dans l\u2019instrumentation. La charmante <strong>Purdey<\/strong> de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=k7z1BwATUdQ\"><strong>Chapeau Melon et Bottes de Cuir<\/strong> <\/a>virevolte dans le coin. Mais le refrain sonne plus r\u00eache et carr\u00e9ment glam-rock avant que n\u2019arrivent violons et clavecin. A nouveau effet E.bow sur la guitare, du piano Fender Rhodes, arriv\u00e9e de la batterie, Gaz et Mick au chant \u00e0 l\u2019unisson. Mont\u00e9e avec des Ah Ah Ah inqui\u00e9tants&#8230; Signalons ici l\u2019excellence de la section rythmique <strong>Quinn<\/strong> <strong>\/ Goffey<\/strong>, un atout et une singularit\u00e9 pour la bande. La vid\u00e9o hommage aux films d\u2019\u00e9pouvante subira la censure britannique. Effectivement, \u00e7a ne fait plus tr\u00e8s <strong>Muppets<\/strong>. Un pont inattendu venu d\u2019ailleurs (Sic) puis une fausse fin en coda. Le chanteur et ses potes s\u2019amusent avec les symboles et les arrangements. Les Fran\u00e7ais de <strong>Air<\/strong> parcourent quasiment le m\u00eame chemin. Si ses ventes s\u2019av\u00e9reront inf\u00e9rieures aux premiers volumes, il atteindra quand m\u00eame la troisi\u00e8me place (Tiens donc !) en GB. En tout cas, il aura permis aux p\u2019tits gars d\u2019Oxford de casser leur image en d\u00e9voilant le squelette de leur potentiel cr\u00e9atif. Ils iront plus loin par la suite&#8230;<br \/>\nAvec le recul de ces nombreuses ann\u00e9es, <strong>Supergrass \/ The X Ray Album<\/strong> demeure un classique du Rock Anglais de la fin du XXe si\u00e8cle.
